The Village Square was born from something deeply personal.
When my beloved mother passed away, my father was just 59, widowed after nearly three decades of partnership. I watched him navigate the impossible: rebuilding his life in solitude. He was hopeful and brave, but also quiet, weighed down by the loneliness of a home once filled with laughter.
In his journey, I saw a truth far bigger than my family: too many elders walk through their later years alone. Friendships shrink, families move away, and the rhythm of daily life can grow painfully still.
Out of that grief came a seed of hope: to create a place where no elder has to walk alone.
That seed became The Village Square.
Our roots are deeply planted in African values of community, respect, and intergenerational care. In our cultures, elders have always been the wisdom-keepers, storytellers, and teachers. At The Village Square, we honor that truth by weaving culture, wellness, and connection into everything we do from bingo nights and dance circles to tech tutorials, health workshops, and community outings.
What began as one family’s story is now becoming a community-wide movement. Together, we carry forward the promise that aging is not decline, but legacy in motion.
